Project 550...

A few days away from completion now. Here's an in-progress shot of the custom silencers...

Finished fabrication of the rear bracket for the number plate etc. It was hand-formed, TIG welded and then had a custom made stainless steel bayonet bulb fitting riveted in. It's off at the painters now.

I must offer another apology for the lack of updates. Been a heck of a week, but....

Project 550 is almost done! Wiring is finished, tank is painted and the seat came back from the upholsterers this week. Check it out...

Project 550...

Been working on a pair of stainless steel headlight brakets for the CB550. The "ears" have been autogenously welded (that is without using any filler) onto 3/8" bar. The welds were pretty tidy so I took a few shots with the macro. Photos of the finished brackets to follow.

On the making of a new dual seat pan...

The CB550 is gonna have carry two up on a regular basis so no café seats here. This posed it's own problems from a stylistic point of view. Dual seats have a tendency to look bulky on any bike so I wanted to achieve a fairly flat, thin look without going the uncomfortable brat-style route. Here's the process...


Firstly the original seat was completely stripped so that the pan could be used as a guide for holes, studs etc. The original was in very poor condition.



The frame brace in the first shot is what causes the original seat to rise so dramatically so it was chopped and a new, much lower bracket was formed. This still needs to be finished and painted as it is going to serve a few more purposes yet.


Based loosely on the measurements of the original but modified to meet the new spec, a cardboard template was made.


This was then translated into 20 gauge mild steel.


Separate pieces were fabricated to fill the gaps created during bending and to add some shape.



Then she went under the welding torch. Fully TIG welded with all holes drilled and studs tacked in it's ready for the final stage...


Paint! A nice powder coat of satin black.

And it's off to the upholsterers on Monday. Stay tuned!

This rather special braided wire arrived today. An entire loom will be cutom made out of this stuff. Work will commence in the next few days...

On the making of a stainless steel speedo face...

An idea I've had for a long time finally came together this week. Having created a new design for the speedo face and getting it printed up, I set about making the actual face out of brushed stainless steel. After a bit of milling, turning, hand work and careful reassembly I'm rather pleased with the result...

Rims and hubs were picked up from the powder coaters last week and have now been re-built. They're going off to be balanced and trued this week by a specialist. Here's a before, during and after -

Fuel tank work has begun. The first job has been stripping out the old lining, which had deteriorated, and re-lining with POR-15. For now, here is the tank before work began. More photos to follow...


Project 550...

The completion of the CB550 brake drum repair that begun in a previous post. The process has essentially seen the old brake liner machined out, a new brake drum from an Austin Metro (seen in the first photo) machined and threaded and the hub threaded to match. The liner was then screwed in with locktite (left hand thread) and skimmed to the correct I.D. As far as I'm aware there has never been a brake liner on any vehicle that has been screwed in but, due to the way these hubs were made and the lack of spares, this was the only solution. Thankfully it has been successful and the hub can now go off for powder coating.
